A similar theme as my previous post on the harm in “if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.”
Many people in both the mainstream or the “spiritual” space will tell you that “doubt means don’t” or “doubt is a no”.
That if you have doubt, it’s a sign that something is not right.
This would always trigger my anxiety greatly. Spoiler alert: it is NORMAL to have doubt where there is fear.
With my work with Sheryl Finn (you may know her as Sheryl Paul) @wisdomofanxiety, I have learned that doubt definitely does not mean don’t.
Doubt is another sign to pause and explore.
Doubt can be deep projections from the subconscious/unconscious that are calling us to look inward at our fears.
Let me tell you a story about some bodywork I received recently from @lindsaycourcelle.
She offers internal pelvic work as a part of her practice. I wanted to do it, but I kept coming up against waves and waves of fear through my body as we were getting closer to exploring that work.
I had doubts about whether it was the right time for me. “Maybe I need to do my own work more first,” I reasoned with myself.
Lindsay held space for all of the fear, and I was able to articulate a bit of what was coming up. She listened as my mind talked through it, she offered thoughts and support, and it slowed us down so I could ask for what I needed in the situation.
I got to a point where I decided I wanted to face my fear and move through the doubt, to do the internal pelvic work.
And…I had some of the most profound healing experiences of my life.
If I had let my DOUBT mean DON’T, without digging deeper and exploring further, I would have missed out on some of the deepest healing available to me.
My ego mind, my wounded parts, and my fear were trying to protect me.
But the fear parts don’t know what’s on the other side of facing it. It just doesn’t want you to go there. So it puts doubts in the way.
The next time you feel doubt, I encourage you to use it as a sign to GO DEEPER WITHIN, rather than simply walk away or view is as a no.
Consider that nothing in life is black-and-white, and there may be some buried treasure waiting to be uncovered. An important gem on your path of healing.
